Flu-Proof Your Home this Season

Does it seem like everyone around you is either sick or has been sick?

No doubt about it, there are some nasty cold and flu bugs going around! In fact, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control, this is one of the worst flu seasons we’ve had in recent years.

And the season isn’t even expected to be over for several weeks, so now is the time to get serious about those healthy habits! To help, we’ve rounded up 5 things you can do in hopes to “flu-proof” your home this season.

  1. Disinfect, disinfect, disinfect!

Flu germs and viruses are found on the items you touch every day. You’re probably already taking care of the well known hotbeds for germs: countertops, toilets, and sinks. But what about light switches, banisters, remote controls, phones? Germs are lurking there too! So disinfect, disinfect, disinfect!

  1. Don’t forget to sanitize your cleaning tools

If you’re not sanitizing your cleaning tools after you use them, you may just be spreading germs around your house instead of getting rid of them. Washing your cleaning gear in hot, soapy water with a drop of two of bleach can help get rid of those nasty germs for good. And if you’re really feeling really zealous, you may also want to make the switch to disposable cleaning products during the height of the flu season.

  1. Wash your hands and practice keeping them away from your face

Since the cold and flu are so contagious, it’s important to wash your hands often and practice keeping them away from your face if at all possible. Remind your family to do the same especially at and after attending public places like school and work.

  1. Stock up on tissues

Can you even have enough tissues in your house during the winter? According to experts, a sneeze can spray cold and flu germs several feet! But if done into a tissue, the projection radius decreases giving you a better chance of escaping those germs. So place those handy little boxes throughout the house and easily accessible!

  1. Live a healthy lifestyle.

Your best defense against any type of illness is to try and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating well, getting enough sleep, drinking lots of fluids, and managing your stress all play a part in keeping your immune system healthy so it can fight off any illness if necessary.
