Kickstart Your Fitness!

If you’re among the millions of Americans committing (or recommitting) to get in shape this year, we salute you! We think it’s important for everyone to get fit and stay healthy, and we love that Utah is a state where it’s so easy to live an active lifestyle. There are tons of activities that can help you reach your fitness goals. Here are a couple of ideas that are sure to get you up and moving!

  1. Salt Lake County Parks and Rec
Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of adult sports programs at instructional, recreational, and competitive levels of play. Men's, women's and coed sports leagues and tournaments are offered throughout year and all over the Salt Lake valley. You can participate on an individual or team basis.  There are also many recreation centers throughout the valley that have indoor swimming pools.  It's a great way to get into shape!

  1. Utah Mountains
We have the “greatest snow on earth” so we shouldn't miss an opportunity mention the great ski and snowboarding just up the mountain. No season pass? No problem! Thursday Night Lights at Brighton Ski Resort is a program designed to teach and motivate the community to stay active during the winter season with skiing and snowboarding. Everyone, of all abilities, can receive discounted lift tickets, lessons and rentals from 4-9pm on select Thursday nights. And let's not forget to mention snowshoeing!  It's a great way to get the heart rate up and take in the beautiful sights of Utah's mountains.

  1. Ice Skating
Ice skating can be one of the most fun ways to stay fit this winter! The stability, control and strength involved in ice skating make it a fun and healthy activity for all ages and abilities. There are plenty of outdoor ice rinks that offer a charming winter venue: The Gallivan Center, Solitude Ski Resort, Midway City Rink. But there are plenty of indoor rinks as well: The Olympic Oval, Acord Ice Center, Salt Lake County Ice Center, as well as much more!

  2. Walking
Trying to get in those 10,000 steps? Don’t let winter stop you from reaching the magic number. If you’re cautious about slick conditions in the winter, then mall walking may be the answer you’ve been looking for. There are a number of malls around the valley that open from 6:00-7:00am, so early birds can get their exercise. Some malls even have a map so you can maximize your distance. It’s a great way to keep up those steps and not have to worry about ice patches to slip on. If you're not a fan of mall walking, try the Olympic Oval. It has a world-class indoor track facility open to the public Monday-Saturday.  Get inspired walking the same routes as your favorite olympic athletes!

We hope you'll join the BHURDinUtah team as we commit (or rather recommit) to improving our health and wellness this year! Here's to a great, and active 2017!
